Moulding is a very common products used in interior finishing projects, whether for home decoration or commercial decoration, because it is a fast and cost-effective way to improve the look of a room. However, sometimes people may find moulding is easy to crack after installation. Below is some reasons to moulding cracking:
Advantages of MDF moulding
Improper moisture content control of the product itself
Whether MDF moulding or wood moulding, if the product moisture content is not controlled well during production, the raw material internal structure will become unstable. So the moulding is easy to have some problems, such as warping, mould growth, or cracking, etc. Therefore, if the factory can not control moisture content well during manufacturing, the risk of moulding cracking after installation will increase significantly.
Changes in moisture caused by the surrounding environment
After unpacking, moulding is exposed to air. If the storage environment is not dry, or the wall surface where you want to install the moulding contains moisture, the moulding moisture content will change accordingly. The moulding absorb moisture, the surface coating will expand and fall off, and moulding internal structure will reacts unevenly. That will lead to moulding cracks after installation.
Insufficient white primer coating
If the white primed surface finish is not treated well, then the coating can not protect moulding from absorbing moisture, then moulding will swell and deform. So the moulding will be easy to crack with time goes by after installation. Besides, if the surface coating is too thick, and has poor adhesion, the coating will crack and fall off.
Unstable raw material structure
The raw material also can influence the moulding stability. If the wood fiber made from the MDF moulding is too short, to mixed or the adhesive quality is poor, then the moulding will have poor nail holding ability and easy to crack. The wood moulding is made from natural wood, the wood fiber can be changed by cutting the wood to small species, so the finger-joint production process is often used in wood moulding products. This will reduce internal stress and improve overall structural performance. Of course, the hardwood moulding do not need to apply finger-joint production process, because their natural wood fiber is strong enough.
Uneven wall surface
Installing moulding on an uneven wall can cause uneven stress distribution. If you install the moulding into the position by force, the moulding internal stress may increase and lead the moulding easy to crack. Also, when you install the moulding by a nail gun and with excessive pressure, the moulding may be over-compressed, that also increase the possibility of cracks after installation.
How to avoid cracking after installation
Choose qualified moulding products. The high quality moulding products are made from well-produced materials and advanced production process, so they are stable and strong enough, that can ensure a smoother installation process.
Make sure the wall surface is flat and dry before installation. When the wall is flat ,the moulding can fixed on the wall firmly, and keep their stable performance after installation. If the wall is dry, it will not cause the moulding to absorb moisture.
Avoid applying excessive force during installation. Do not press or clamp the moulding too tightly, as external force can damage the product and cause cracking.
